With “Broken Silence”, his now seventh solo CD, Leimgruber again ventures into new territory.
He had long since left the paths of powerful electric jazz, which he played with “OM” in the 1970s, to instead become one of the most refined representatives of a delicate, often very abstract improvisational music, whose proximity to composed contemporary music is unmistakable. But with “Broken Silence”, Leimgruber takes another step forward: The nine tracks on this CD are developed as if emerging from silence, gently breaking it, only to eventually lead back into eloquent silence.
Despite these musical intensifications, particularly in the middle of the CD, Leimgruber gives far more space to the gesture of the quiet, the reflective. In this, the spirit of spontaneous music-making in the moment dominates.
